LAST RITES FOR FRUCTUOSO GARCIA
Funeral mass for Fructuoso Garcia, 92, of Clayton was said at 10 o'clock Friday morning, January 9, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church by Fr. Leonard Bayer. Rosary was recited at the church at 7 o'clock Thursday evening. Interment was in the Clayton Cemetery.
Born April 4, 1888, at Folsom, Garcia died at 10:20 CST Tuesday morning, January 6, at Coon Memorial Hospital in Dalhart. Prior to 1935, Garcia ranched in the Pasamonte community.
County assessor from 1935 to 1938. He was a WPA project foreman for two years and a Clayton patrolman for two years. From 1942 to 1948 he worked at the port-of-entry in Clayton.Garcia was an employee of Ralph's Package Store from 1948 until 1963. He retired in 1973 after ten years service at the Eklund Hotel.
Survivors include three daughters, Josephine Garcia of Clayton, Cleofas Barbara of Albuquerque, and Rafelita Tixier of Conchas, NM; six sons, Emilio, Frank and Fructuoso, all of Clayton, Vidal of Hayden, and Louis and Salome, both of Albuquerque; 33 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Modesta Duran, in December of 1963. They were married on January 27, 1910.
Garcia's Father, Solome, was serving as the Union County Sheriff at the turn of the century. He was the presiding official at the hanging of Thomas "Black Jack" Ketchum. Much against his father's wishes, Garcia witnessed the event through a hole in the fence.
