Oldest-living person in Massachusetts
(Published: December 6, 2003, Cape Cod Times)
WEST DENNIS - Julia (Bergmann) Dougherty, 110, died yesterday at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. She was the wife of the late Gustaf Ekstrom. They were married in the early 1920s. She was also the wife of the late Harrison Dougherty. Mrs. Dougherty was born in Lima, Peru, sailed with her family to the United States at 6 and settled in New York City, where she was educated. When she married her first husband, she settled in Mount Clair, N.J., and raised a family. After her second husband retired in 1950, she moved to West Dennis. At the time of her death, she was the oldest-living person in Massachusetts. Her 109th birthday was celebrated with a party at West Dennis Graded School, where she was recognized by the House of Representatives and presented a gold-embossed certificate with a drawing of the Boston Post Cane. She was a communicant of St. Pius X Church in South Yarmouth and a member of Dennis-Yarmouth Women's Club, Barnstable Comedy Club and the Garden Club in West Dennis. She loved to sing and act, performed in operettas and plays since a young age, was active with several choral groups and was a member of Mount Clair Operetta. She enjoyed gardening and swimming at West Dennis Beach. Her greatest joy was time spent with family.

Survivors include two sons, John C. and Frederick J. Ekstrom, both of West Dennis; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Julia Ekstrom Messersmith.

A Mass of Christian burial is at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Church, Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, followed by burial in Brewster Cemetery, Lower Road. Memorial donations may be made to VNA of Cape Cod, P.O. Box 370, Hyannis, MA 02601.
