When he was 17 years old, he went with his parents to Montgomery County, Ohio. In 1847, he married Martha J. Delong. In 1848, they came to White County. The couple had four children. He was bapitzed in the Methodist Church. He was a soldier in the Civil War with Company A, 35th Indiana Infantry. His obituary read, "for many months he endured the hardships of camp life and returned home an invalid." For ten years prior to his death, he suffered from cancer in his mouth and throat.
