Pioneer, along with James Bogardus of cast-iron architecture in America. Built the first cast-iron building in Boston (possibly the first in the United States) in 1842. Established a large factory in New York City in 1846, and erected cast-iron buildings all over the United States and in Egypt and Cuba. His book on cast-iron architecture and ornamentation is still in print.
