Gratiot County Portrait and Biographical Album tells that Daniel Griffeth was a farmer and a son of Daniel and Lois (McNeal) Griffeth, natives of Wales and Scotland. The moved to the state of New York in 1814 where his mother died in 1835. The father moved to this state and he died in Manchester, Washtenaw Co, in 1847 at the age of 63 years. Daniel Griffith, age 20, first settled in Marshall.
He returned to NY after a year and when the Mexican War occurred, he enlisted as a private in Co F, 8th New York Unfantry under General Worth. He participated in Cherubusco on August 19, 1847, Molino Del Rey September 8, 1847 and the capture of Mexico Sept 12, 13, 14, 1847. He was not injured in these endeavors and was honorably discharged with the ran of Orderly Sergeant in August 1848 at Jefferson Barracks. He returned to Oakland County, Michigan and once again was in the business of farming.

He was united in marriage to Nancy M. Burgess on Dec 19, 1849 in Independence, Oakland Co., MI. After two years of marraige, they then moved onto Wayne County and on December 18, 1856 came to Gratiot County purchasing 80 acres of land in Pine River Township. After five years of living in St. Louis, they moved to Emerson Township and settled on 120 acres of land. They endured many hardships before they had a decent home. He then added 40 more acres, 100 of it which was cultivated. He and his wife had 12 children:

Baby Griffeth, 1877 - 1877

Mrs. and Mrs. Daniel Griffeth were active members of the Baptist Church. His wife was the first person to be baptized in Pine River. He built the first frame house north of Pine River and drove the first team from St. Louis to Midland. He is one of the very old pioneers who helped to settle Gratiot County. He also was one of the most active supporters in the National Greenback party.
