SANDWICH Elizabeth "Bettie" Ragle Soule of Sandwich, died Friday, August 27, 2010 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston following a gradual decline in health. Both the daughter and wife of U.S. Navy physicians, Mrs. Soule moved to Sandwich from Andover, Mass., in 1979, where she quickly became involved in the community. Her husband, Dr. Francis G. "Frank" Soule, who died in 1986, supervised the construction of a new wing of the Sandwich Public Library, which was dedicated in his honor. Mrs. Soule served St. John's Episcopal Church in several capacities, including writing cards and letters to visitors and shut-ins.Born December 17, 1920, in San Diego, Mrs. Soule graduated from Holton Arms School in the Washington, D.C., area and attended Mills College and the University of Hawaii before World War II and a new romance interrupted her education. She and her husband met in Honolulu, Hawaii, where her father, Dr. H.E. Ragle was stationed, shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor. After she was evacuated with her family, they continued their courtship by mail, leading to their marriage in March, 1943. Together they served in numerous Navy assignments, including Tucson; Washington, D.C.; San Diego; Philadelphia; Subic Bay, Philippine Islands; and Bethesda, Maryland. Mrs. Soule was a consistently gracious hostess, supporting her husband's rise to Chief of Clinical Services at the U.S. Naval Medical Center in Bethesda.Following Dr. Soule's retirement from the Navy, they relocated to Andover, where Mrs. Soule served as hostess of the Cooley House, the Phillips Academy's special function facility, when her husband became Medical Director at the Academy. Mrs. Soule was also an active member of the P.E.O. and various Navy Wives' Clubs.A life-long collector, Mrs. Soule's greatest passion was probably books, particularly children's books. When she moved from her Sandwich condo to the Decatur House last year, she generously donated scores of modern and classic children's books to the Sandwich Public Library. She is survived by sons John Soule of Austin, Texas; Dick Soule of Hockessin, Delaware; and Bob Soule of Alexandria, Virginia; sister Emily Gene Eilertsen of Newburyport, Massachusetts; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to family, she cherished the many relationships her active life brought. Friends and family know how much thought she put into the right card or letter for each communication.A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31, followed sometime later by a graveside family service at Arlington National Cemetery, where she will be interred beside her husband and parents.Donations in Mrs. Soule's memory may be sent to St. John's Episcopal Church in Sandwich or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod. Mrs. Soule's family thanks her neighbors, many caregivers and especially Linda and Steve Austin at the Decatur House for the assistance and care they provided in recent years. For online guestbook, please visit Faggas Funeral Home Watertown
