John Gledhill Helm

BREWSTER — John Gledhill Helm, 61, died Dec. 11, 2008 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He was the husband of Stephanie A. (Donahoe) Helm.
Born into an Army family at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C., Mr. Helm graduated from W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax, Va., in 1965. He enlisted in the Army in 1967 and served in Vietnam as a helicopter crew chief, earning the Bronze Star. After his enlistment, he returned to college, receiving a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee.
Mr. Helm was commissioned in the Army in 1976, where he served in the Military Intelligence Branch and was posted to Arizona, Belgium, Maryland, Virginia and Florida. He retired from active duty at U.S. Central Command as a lieutenant colonel in 1996.
He visited Cape Cod often over the years and made Brewster his primary residence in 2006 when his wife, Capt. Stephanie Helm, was posted to the Naval War College. He was an avid reader with special interests in history, anthropology and science. He was also a passionate gardener and took particular delight in his pond, which he designed with loving care.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Helm is survived by his mother, Kathleen (Stubbs) Helm of Brewster; a son, John Matthew Helm of Brewster; and two sisters, Rachel Helm of Grass Valley, Calif., and Linda Covert-Mosier of Kodiak, Alaska. He was predeceased by his first wife, Major Sandra Cross Helm and his father, Col. Donald Helm.
Funeral services were held Dec. 16 at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. Burial will be Feb. 10 in Arlington National Cemetery.
