Henry was the son of Henry Atkinson & Grace Belvin, and the brother of Octavia Atkinson Gentry, Virginia Atkinson, William Atkinson & Lucy Atkinson Fleet. He married Arabella Dobson on Nov. 4, 1868 at Waterview Plantation, and they had 5 children: Margaret Atkinson Dudley, Henry Atkinson, Lucy Atkinson Dudley, Ethel Atkinson Cooke & Marmaduke Atkinson.
At the age of sixteen, Henry joined the Confederate forces during the Civil War. At the second battle of Spottsylvania Court House, he was shot and captured. Henry was released at the end of the war and he returned to Virginia where he took up the practice of law. A prominent politician, he was twice elected to the Virginia State Senate where he took part in many historic reconstruction battles.
