Shinberger is heralded as a major founder of the "First Special Service Force" as seen, in book form, as "The Devil's Brigade", first published in 1966 pitched as "The hell-for-leather saga of the wildest, toughest fighting men of World War II - the special force now called The Green Berets."
--In 1941 John B. Shinberger formed the first U. S. Army Airborne Artillery. "When his telegraph request for certain weapons was not filled within 48 hours, he composed a second wire and signed it with the name of Brigadier General Brehon Somervell, War Department Supply and Procurement chief. The guns made their appearance on the following day."

--John B. Shinberger "took on an enemy tank singlehandedly, receiving from the incident a number of serious wounds as well as the Distinguished Service Cross."

--John B. Shinberger: "Ordained a priest, he was assigned to a series of rural churches. He was an impressive figure in these pulpits, because he wore his medals on his surplice. His body healed, but his mind never quite recovered from the traumatice experiences of his wartime career.
Fr. John suffered several nervous breakdowns and finally, in 1959, was admitted to the Virginia State Hospital as a hopeless mental case. There he killed himself."
