George served in Co. K of the 3rd Tennessee Infantry. When he died he suffered from chronic diarrhea, rheumatism, indigestion, headaches,and liver disease. He wed Amanda C. Hancock June 20, 1864. George stood only 5 ft 5 inches and was 29 when he enlisted. He was a tough man to have survived the following experience. He was struck by lighting near Carthage, Tn. in June 64. They were "after guerillas and had stopped for the night". A thunderstorm came up. Lighting struck guns stacked near him and ran to his gun lying beside him on the ground rendering him senseless.
His father was Ellis Smith and his mother Unknown Bailey.
