Grandma is the oldest of six children born to Joseph Robert 'Joe' LOCKHART (1877 TX - 1949 TX) and Donnie 'Pearl' DYKES (1878 TX - 1961 TX). She married Grandpa in Milam County, Texas. They have five children, three of whom are still living. Grandma was buried in Milano Cemetery on 23 Nov 1983.
Grandma spelled her name two ways during her lifetime. Early documents, including some bearing her signature, give her first name as 'Faye'. In later years, she use the name 'Fay'.
As "second honor student" in the 1919 graduating class of Stephenville High School, Grandma was awarded a scholarship in the Literary Department of Texas Christian University. However, she attended John Tarleton Agricultural College in Stephenville, Texas, where she earned her State First Grade Certificate (Teachers Temporary Certificate), valid from August 25, 1920 until August 31, 1924.
Grandma taught in several schools, including Milano, until she married. By the time her teachers certificate expired, she had one child and was expecting her second; so, she no longer taught in the public schools.
She later got a civil service job as a postal clerk in the Milano Post Office, advancing to postmistress. On December 20, 1963, Grandma retired from her career in the U.S. Postal Service. Although she served as Postmistress for many years, Grandma's name was omitted from the list of Milano Postmasters on page 9 of the book, "Milano, TX: a History" by Basil McGregor.
