Helen Louise (Shaw) Barton, 83, Arkansas City, was reunited in spirit with her savior on Friday, May 20, 2005, at her residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.
Helen was born July 19, 1921, in Arkansas City to Dennis H. and Katherine (O'Connell) Shaw. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1939. On May 29, 1942, Helen married Ernest Hampton Barton. The couple lived on their farm west of Arkansas City the majority of their lives. Helen was a PBX operator and wheat buyer for Dixie-Portland Mills. She retired in 1986 after 30 plus years of service. After retirement, she owned and operated Tan Ten. She enjoyed any job that pertained to interacting with people. Helen was an independent, feisty soul her entire life. She has been attended by several attentive care givers the past 4 1/2 years since her stroke, Lenora Evans, Chris Pickett, Deb Osborne. Through their efforts mom's life continued to be rewarding, active and enjoyable.
Survivors include her two daughters, Carol Ann and her husband, Michael Carney, and Donna Jean and her husband, Richard Jones, all of Arkansas City; four grandchildren, Dee Ann Thompson, Brenton Jett, Charme Lyman and Mike Carney Jr.; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, "Hamp;" and a sister Norma Gray.
Memorials have been established with the First United Pentecostal Church of Arkansas City or the Hope Cemetery Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.
