Cottonwood Heights - One woman was killed and three other persons seriously injured in a two-car collision Monday at 1:45 p.m., at 7800 S. Wasatch Blvd.
Kathy Johnson, 24, of 3540 South 1300 East, was pronounced dead at Cottonwood Hospital. A physician and registered nurse worked over the victim while she was still pinned and until she was loaded into the rescue unit. Asst. Sandy Fire Chief and Capt. David Jensen applied heart massage and resuscitation enroute to the hospital.
Listed in serious condition in Cottonwood Hospital are Charles Bartkus, 25, 4434 Lemans Dr. (900 East), Barbara C. Kolbe, 23, Minataka, Minn., and Ruth Ehlert, 19, 3592 Flynn Drive.
Deputy Sheriff Holger V. Jensen said the accident occurred as a southbound car driven by Miss Ehlert was passing another car. In attempting to stop, Miss Ehlert skidded 140 feet sideways when it collided with the northbound car. Miss Johnson was a passenger in the Ehlert car.
Mr. Bartkus was the driver of the northbound car, Deputy Jensen said.
He told the investigating officer he had picked up Miss Kolbe, his passsenger, at Snowbird and was giving her a ride into Salt Lake City.
Deputy Jensen said Mr. Bartkus was the only one not pinned in by the grinding accident. Miss Kolbe was freed after 15 minutes and officers were unable to free the other two until the rescue unit arrived.
Efforts to open the door on the driver's side were fruitless and it was impossible to remove them through the passenger's side.
