Adelbert "Dell" Jasper CHAPIN was born in 1875 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He was the 3rd son of William & Maryetta Chapin. He had 4 brothers and 1 sister. Little is known of his early years. He grew up in Fond du Lac, WI.

Dell CHAPIN married Anna HARTMAN 14 JUN 1898 in Fond du Lac County, WI. Dell and Anna had 2 known children.
Irene Carrie CHAPIN b. 16 NOV 1900; Albert Dell CHAPIN b. 20 NOV 1903.

He was a famous athlete at one time; he fought some of the best lightweight wrestlers in the country, winning a majority of his bouts. He was noted in his obit as having made large sums of money from wrestling but he died penniless.

Adelbert apparently served time in prison. The obit stated "A craving for drink proved his downfall. He has been arrested for being intoxicated and has also served time in the jail and in the penitentiary for criminal offenses. He was released from the state pententary but a few weeks ago."

Dell and Anna allowed adoption of their 2 children to Dell's brother, Melvin Chapin and his wife, Mathilda. Melvin and Mathilda had no natural children of their own. They adopted the children on 16 JUL 1906.

Dell's later whereabouts are unknown [probably serving time in prison] until his death notice in the Stevens Point Journal (Stevens Point, WI) edition of 14 OCT 1911. "Fond du Lac -- Dell Chapin, thirty-six years old, famous as a wrestler, was killed by poisonous gases in an old well. He was descending into the well to repair the pump, and when down about ten feet suddenly loosed his hold and fell to the bottom, a distance of 34 feet. The fire department was called out to rescue his body. The work was made difficult by the presence of the deadly gas. He was dead when reached."

His burial site is listed as Rienze Cemetery, with McLain and Mahoney mortuary handling the arrangements. His funeral was held at his parent's home at 510 East Second Street, Fond du Lac, WI with the Rev. L. H. Keller officiating.
