– William A. Kernen, 64, Rio Grande County assessor, died at midnight Tuesday, June 23, 1970 in the hospital in Del Norte. He suffered a stroke about a month prior and had planned to take up residence in a rest home in Ft. Collins. Bill was a native of Del Norte, the son of J. Emil and Annie Kernen and was born at the Kernen brick house on Pinos Creek January 27, 1906. Most of his life was spent in Del Norte.
He graduated from Del Norte High School in 1924 and his life covered many years in the vegetable industry, food store business, the service station and public office. He lettuce tramped when a young man on the tour and in local packing sheds, worked for Stan Wright and Bill Heller, had his own suburban grocery in Denver and was a Conoco lessee for many years. He was elected county assessor after Floyd Gibbs, re-elected and had been re-nominated to run in November. As assessor he was active in the state group and the district study workshops.
A member of Knights of Pythias, he had passed thru the lodge chairs and served a term as Coronado’s chancellor commander.
He served several years on the chamber of commerce board, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Bill was an ardent sports fan and followed the Tigers locally and the collegians and pros on the national scene.
He married Lorene Della Curby over thirty five years ago. Survivors are his wife, brother Elmer of Monterey, Calif., sister Christine Long, Waterloo, Iowa, step sons Joe and John Kirby, Grand Junction, one step daughter and other relatives.
Services are at 10 Saturday at Pioneer United .Church with graveside services conducted by the Knights of Pythias. Arrangements were by the Sharp and Doney funeral Home of Del Norte.
