Rod, who was a resident of Hoover, graduated from Ramsay High School in Birmingham, and Alabama College - The University of Montevallo, where he was a member of The Sigma Club - Theta Sigma Chi fraternity. He was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church and a Mason.
He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Jane Powers; daughters, Misses Natalie and Amelia Powers, both of Hoover; brother Terry Powers; sister, Ms. Susan Powers, all of Birmingham.
A true artist, Rod was cherished by many.
His high school and college friend, Bill Gresham, was moved at his death to write the following:
I loved Rod, he always remains my adolescent friend
For his haphazard spirit
He made my character a better place to reside
And without his presence my life's void shall not soon mend.
Roddy Bill's life was true
He gave all for those he touched
He never denied a call for need
A finer more trustworthy man I never knew.
"I have fought the good fight,
I have finished the race,
I have kept the faith."
