Died during the battle of Gettysburg.
37th Va. Infantry, Co. I,(tombstone says Co. E.) wounded while carrying the colors of the 37th at Gettysburg. His leg was amputated and he died of his wounds. Buried at Gettysburg.
According to the regimental history - he belonged to Co. C, along with his son, Jefferson D. Jessee, Jr.
There were three Jessee men in the 37th - all in Co. C - James P. (died of typhoid at Monterey, Va. 8/2/61); Jefferson D.; and Jefferson D. Jr. (died 10/13/62 of typhoid at Chimborazo).
Jefferson D. Jesse was carrying the regimental colors at Gettysburg - but before that, he had been wounded at Second Manassas 8/28/62. When he was captured (at Culp's Hill) at Gettysburg, he was taken to the 12th Corps Hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured left leg - the leg was amputated and he died 7/4/63. The roster states that he is buried at Gettysburg NMP.
He was relocated to Hollywood Cem. in the 1870s. His headstone is in a prominant place, very near Gen. George Pickett's gravesite.
