Manning, William, b. ca. 1840, Duplin Co., NC. Enlisted in Co. H, 55th North Carolina Infantry, 4/3/1862. Attained the rank of corporal. Captured at Gettysburg, Pa., 7/1/1863. Initially sent to Ft. McHenry, Baltimore, Md. Later transferred to Ft. Delaware and then to Pt. Lookout, Maryland. Took the oath of allegiance and enlisted in Co. G, 1st United States Volunteer Infantry ("Galvanized Yankees"), 2/19/1864. D. 12/24/1864 (chronic diarrhea). Remains removed from Ft. Rice Cemetery and reburied in this cemetery, 3/6/1905.
