Butler, James P., b. ca. 1846, Merriweather, Georgia, son of Larkin and Martha Miller Butler. Married Mary Antionette "Nettie" Clark in Meriwether County, Ga. On Enlisted 9/10/1861, Company E, 28th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, in Meriwether County, GA. On 9/7/63, captured at Morris Island, SC and sent to Point Lookout, MD. After having been captured and sent to Pt. Lookout, Maryland, took the oath of allegiance and enlisted in Co. C, 1st United States Volunteer Infantry ("Galvanized Yankees"). D. either 4/14 or 4/15/1864 (scurvy), Fort Rice, Dakota Territory. Remains removed from Ft. Rice Cemetery and reburied in this cemetery, 3/6/1905. Wife never remarries, and collects a US widows pension. Child: Amanda Melinda "Candy" Butler born 4/15/1861 - story goes that he said she was pretty candy,thus the nickname she had all her life.

His sister, Caroline Matilda Butler married James Washington Clark, who also served in the 28th Georgia and died in 1864. Her second marriage was to her deceased husband's brother, Amos J. Clark.
