RESIDENCES: A resident of Luray District #3 in 1860, Page Co., Va. He was listed as a student and within the year had graduated from Columbia University as a minister.
RECORD OF SERVICE: Enlisted 5/3/1861 in Co. B, 17th Va. Inf. at Front Royal. Transferred to the Dixie Artillery, 10/10/1861 and enlisted at Manassas. Appointed lieutenant. Reassigned by Special Order # 186/14 (6/18/1863). Transferred to Mosby's 43rd Bttn. Va. Cav. on 1/11/1864. Appointed captain. Paroled 4/22/1865 at Winchester: age 26, 5'11", fair complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes.
POSTWAR INFORMATION: S.F. Chapman went on to serve as a chaplain with the 4th Immune Regiment in the Spanish American War, continuing to minister in Virginia, and father of the public school system in Alleghany Co., Va., becoming its first superintendent of public schools. A member of Stonewall Jackson Camp, UCV, Staunton, Va., 2/6/1906.
