Joseph's parents immigrated from Hesse Darmstadt, Germany about 1830 and settled in Shrewsbury, York Co. PA.

Joseph married Margaret Fitler/Fitzler about 1848. They migrated to Wayne Co. IN by 1855-56 and then to Warren area a few years later.

They had seven children.
