Obituary: William "Billy" Edward Free, 82, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006 at Belle Meade Nursing Home in Greenville. Born in Muhlenberg County Feb. 6, 1924, he was a retired coal miner from the Pittsburg and Midway Coal Company. He was a Kentucky Colonel, lifetime member of V.F.W. in Greenville and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a World War II veteran, a P.O.W. and a Purple Heart recipient. He was a member of Mud River Union General Baptist Church in Belton. Survivors include his wife, Lorene Hardison Free; two sons, Mitchell Free of Hopkinsville and Kelly (Sabrina) Free of Greenville; three grandchildren, William Aaron Free, Andrew Free and Rachel Free; a brother, G. W. Free of Louisville; and a sister, Rena Walker of Florida. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Oct. 21 at Mud River Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian Haire officiating. Burial followed in Mud River Union Cemetery in Belton. Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
