~~Educator~~

Marjorie Harris Ritter, the daughter of the late Deacon Thomas Harris, Sr. and Deaconess Mamie Debnam Harris, was born September 11, 1916 in Wake County, North Carolina. She entered into eternal glory on March 17, 2009.
Her early school years were spent during the Depression years. Marjorie graduated from Wendell Elementary School. She walked five miles daily to Wakefield Zebulon High School in Zebulon, North Carolina. There, she was recognized as an outstanding athletic on the basketball team and a scholar student. Upon graduation, Marjorie enrolled in Fayetteville Normal School (Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville, North Carolina) and majored in Elementary Education and received a Bachelor of Science degree.
In 1936, Marjorie's first employment was in the Wake County Public Schools at Eagle Rock Elementary School. This was one of her happiest memories of teaching during her forty-nine years. Marjorie recalled having boarded with the family of Mrs. Bertha Hopkins Goodson, a neighbor who lived next door to the school, weekly for four years, as automobiles were scarce. She said, "I became a member of the Goodson family, and they were wonderful." She also taught at Wendell Elementary and Holly Spring. She was honored as the Teacher of the year and served as a member of the North Carolina Teacher's Association. She retired from Briar Cliff Elementary School in Cary, North Carolina.
Marjorie was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (N.A.A.C.P.) She was also affiliated with the Prince Hall Shriners, where she journeyed through all the levels from the Order of Eastern Star to the Highest level, Daughter of Isis. During her leisure time, Marjorie enjoyed traveling and found time during later years to travel around the United States. She also enjoyed deep sea fishing and fishing excursions outside of the United States.
Marjorie was a lifetime member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wendell, NC. Throughout her life, she maintained a passion for Christ and a love for her large family. She had countless admirers for whom her dignity, gracious manner, and smiling figure made her a beloved friend. She was a faithful and supportive member of the church and the choir until her illness.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, James Curtis Ritter, and her siblings Ronald Harris, Willie Harris,Thomas Harris, Jr. and Charles E.Harris,Sr.
Marjorie leaves to cherish her memory six sisters, Lottie H. Dunston, Mamie H. Scarboro, Mary H. Montague, Della H. Clemons, Delores H. Goodson, and Katie H. Jones(Emanuel) and two brothers, Joseph Harris(Gaybella) and Don Ameche Harris, Sr. A host of neices and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Miss Me But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room.
Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little--but not too long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me--but let me go.

For this a journey that we all must take
And each must go alone.
It's all a part of the Master's plan,
A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss Me--But Let me Go.
