Union veteran of the US Civil War. He registered for the draft for the US Civil War in June 1863. At this time, he was listed as married and was a resident of Ottawa, Minn. When he was 25 years of age, on Feb. 10, 1865, he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery. He was mustered in to the service on Feb. 15, 1865. In Minnesota Civil War Records, 1861-1865, his physical description was that he was six feet tall and had auburn hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion. At the time he enlisted, he was a resident of St. Paul in Ramsey Co., Minn. Just one month after he mustered in, on May 15, 1865, he was promoted to Corporal. He was discharged from the service on Sep. 27, 1865.
In 1868, he married Cordelia "Carrie" C. [maiden name unknown], a native of Pennsylvania. Apparently, she was his second wife. They made their home in Penn township, McLeod Co., Minn. Their daughter Grace E. was born in 1871 and their son John G. was born in 1878.
Prior to enlisting in the service, he was a farmer, an occupation he continued for several years after the war. By 1880, he was working as a stone mason in Penn township, McLeod Co., Minn. He and his wife remained residents of McLeod County, but also lived in Sumter (Minnesota Territorial Census, May 1, 1885) and Brownton townships (Minnesota Territorial Census, June 1905).
