Veteran of the Civil and Indian Wars; he served as a Private in Company G of the 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery and in Company L of the 1st Minnesota Cavalry. He filed for a Civil War pension on May 23, 1889.
He married Ernestine (Klingbiel) Massopust, widow of Franz Massopust who had survived the Dakota War but died of typhoid fever in 1865.
According to the 1875 Census for Milford Township in Brown County, Minn., Benedict and Ernestine had the following children:

Augusta Massopust, age 15
Franz (Frank) Massopust, age 11
Louisa Juni, age 7
Herman Juni, age 4
Ottelia Juni, age 2
Their daughter Emma was born a year later and was age 4 in 1880.
