A member of the Green Berets and a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, he was the first American serviceman killed by enemy fire in Afghanistan. During his career, he participated in U.S. military endeavors in Panama, the Persian Gulf War, Haiti and Afghanistan. He was killed by small-arms fire during an ambush near Khost, near the Pakistan border. Chapman and a CIA agent, who was wounded, had been meeting with tribal leaders. Chapman's name has been added to a granite memorial of other members of the Special Forces who have died, and a small cul-de-sac in front of the Special Forces Headquarters at Fort Lewis has been renamed "Chapman Circle" in his honor.
