CALVIN F. ALFORD
Calvin F. Alford Sr., 68, of Tazewell, died Friday, June 23, 1995 in a Bluefield, W.Va. hospital. Born in Rockbridge Co., a son of the late William Samuel and Irisha Camden Alford. He was a very active member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell where he had served in various offices and committees. He retired as Assistant Resident Engineer in 1987 after 43 years with the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Japan during World War II.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William S. Alford Jr. and Hampton S. Alford Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Wash Alford; three daughters, Mary A. Adkins of Newport, Tenn., Susan A. Dowdy and Jenny A. Walk both of Tazewell; four sons, Calvin F. Alford Jr. of Illa, Ga., G. Michael Alford, Robert B. Alford and William S. Alford III, all of Tazewell; one sister, Harriet Basham of Troutville; one aunt, Carmen Duff of Natural Bridge; and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, June 26, 1995 at the Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell with Dr. Thomas A. Conley officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at the Mount Zion Methodist Church Cemetery near Glasgow in Rockbridge County.
Friends may call at the Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 25, 1995. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, 315 E. Main St., Tazewell, Va. 24651.
