TOLUCA, IL - Marcella Wilma (Rothering) Brown of Toluca died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at the Asta Care Center in Toluca, Ill. She passed away peacefully after a long and memorable life of 93 years. (She claimed she was 113).
She was born Nov. 23, 1914, in Buffalo County, Wis., the daughter of Joseph and Theresa (Grossell) Rothering.
Marcy lived and worked in Winona, Minn., for more than 50 years.
She moved with her husband and family in 1966 to Rochelle Ill., where she lived for more than 30 years.
She was an avid gardener and lover of all animals, having bred and raised more than 100 cockatiels in her home.
A loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, she was a teacher and mentor for all those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her wonderful sense of humor was infectious, with a flair for the practical joke second to none. She will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn H. Brown, in 1992; five brothers and two sisters, Lloyd Rothering, Kermit Rothering, Gaylord Rothering, Clifford Rothering, Blaise Rothering, Marlene (Rothering) Oebser and Gloria (Rothering) Anderson; an infant daughter; a grandson; and two great-grandsons.
One sister survives, Grace (Rothering) Larsen of Winona, Minn. Surviving children are Laverne Rothering and wife, Patricia, of Minnesota City, Minn., Diane Dutch of Ogelsby, Ill., LaVonne Brown of Hanover Park, Ill., Sharon Lange of Winona, Minn., Lynn H. Brown Jr. and wife, Teddy, of LaSalle, Ill., Kathleen Ward of Peru, Ill., Marlene Walsh and husband, Al, of Washington, Ill., and Darlene Probasco and husband, Steve, of Ozawkie Kan.; and granddaughter, Melodee Hoffman of Mount Morris, Ill. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Marcella has chosen the gift of anatomical donation as her final act of leaving this world a better place. What we have done for ourselves dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains, and is immortal.
A memorial service for family and friends will be at the home of her daughter, Marlene Walsh, in Washington, Ill.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials are given to a veterans organization.
The Cumerford-Hurd Funeral Home, 428 W. McClure Ave., Peoria, is in charge of the arrangements.
