Born in Franklin, New York to Chester B. Chamberlain and Olive Pierce. The family moed to Lake County, Illinis by 1860.
In August of 1861, at 21 years of age, James enslisted for a period of three years with Company C 37th Regiment Illinois Infantry. He was enlisted by E. B. Panye. During his service he was loaned to the 1st Missouri Batty B and also was with the 8th Michigan Calvary's companies E and I for a time. He was mustered out of service in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, 04 Oct 1864 by Captain Pomeroy.
James was married to Lucy Jane Butterfield Craver, 28 Jul 1866 in Paw Paw, Van Buren, Michigan. Lucy's first husband, William Henry Craver died of disease while serving with the 1st Michigan Engineers Regiment, Company G. It is believe James and William met during the war.
Husband of Lucy, father of Fred E., Frank Isaac, Mason Irwin, Margaret Elva and Goldie Olive Phoebe Chamberlin, James was known as Mattus. For a time they moved just south of the state boarder to the Stacyville, Iowa area where sons Frank and Mason were born, but by 1880 they lived in Le Roy, Mower, Minnesota where the two youngest, both daugters, were born. By 1900 the family moved to Lodi Township, Taopi, Mower, Michigan where they owned and ran The Taopi House, the local lodge. Lucy died there in 1914.
James died in West Concord, Dodge, MN but is buried next to Lucy at Woodlawn Cemetery, Taopi, Minnesota.
