Asian Pachyderm. She was an icon of personality and talent who gained national acclaim by appearing on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" in the 1970s. As a calf, she came to the San Diego Zoo in 1968 and was transferred to the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park in 1978. For decades, she was considered an ambassador for the zoo doing shows and exhibitions with renown wild life conservationist Joan Embrey. Along with many repeated Carson shows and other television appearances, Carol also gained notice for her ability to paint, using her trunk to hold a paintbrush. Her pictures were sold at various zoo organizations world wide and for sponsored fundraisers. Due to a painful degenerative joint disease, she had to be euthanized by veterinarians.
