James was one of 6 Winans brothers to fight in the Union Army during the Civil War.

James's military highlights:
Aug 21, 1862, enlisted in Meadville, PA as a Sargeant in Co. C, 150th PA (aka Bucktails).
July 1863, listed as MIA during the Battle of Gettysburg.
On May 26, 1864, he died of diarrhea while a POW at Andersonville Prison, GA and is buried there.

His brothers in the Union Army:
David (Co. D, 18th PA Calvary) was KIA at Hanover, PA in a skirmish with Jeb Stuart's Calvary on June 29, 1863 and is buried in Gettysburg, National Cemetery (Gettysburg, PA).

Jason (Co. D, 83rd PA) was KIA in Battle of Hatcher's Run, VA, Feb. 6, 1865. He is buried in Poplar Grove National Cemetery (Petersburg, VA).

John (Regiment is not known at this time) survived the war and died of natural causes on Mar. 16, 1917.

Samuel (Co. C, 169th PA) survived the war and died of natural causes on Apr. 8, 1917.

Chadwick (Co. C, 109th PA) survived the war and died of natural causes on Sep. 3, 1919.
