Greenville - Richard Morgan Gaffney, Sr., 93, lifelong resident of Greenville, passed away December 20, 2013.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Clyde Monroe Gaffney, Sr., and Mary Montague Wright Gaffney. He was married 72 years to Delia Sutherland Gaffney, of Marion, South Carolina.

Mr. Gaffney was a graduate of Greenville High School, Class of 1938 and attended Furman University. He married Delia at Buncombe Street UMC and they moved to Charlotte while he worked for Eastern Airlines as a Field Agent. At the start of WWII, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, VA and Corpus Christi, TX. He worked in naval aviation and was involved in early testing and deployment of radar aboard aircraft. He was a member of the commissioning crew aboard the U.S.S. Chourre on which he toured the Pacific Theatre, serving as Chief Petty Officer, Aviation Chief Radio Technician.

A licensed real estate broker, he was co-founder of Robinson and Gaffney Realtors. He later was President of Woodlawn Memorial Park, which was founded by his father. His real estate career spanned over 50 years in the Greenville market.

He served as President of the Greenville Board of Realtors in 1962 and 1963 and as President of the South Carolina Cemetery Association in 1966.

He was an Emeritus member of the Poinsett Club of Greenville; a continuous member of the American Legion Post #3 for over 60 years; and a long-time member of Northside United Methodist Church and a former member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are his daughter Delia (Dee) Malone, and husband John, of Greenville; son, R. Morgan Gaffney, of St. Petersburg, FL; grandson, Richard Elliott Tapp and wife Elaine, of NY, NY; and a sister, Mary Vance Gibson.

He was preceded in death by siblings Clyde M. Gaffney, Jr., William W. Gaffney, Sr., and Elizabeth G. Tyson.

The family thanks his neighbors and friends who helped him live independently and also his health care providers for their gracious care during his recent illness.

Services will be held Sunday, December 22, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Remembrance Chapel at Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the mausoleum following the service.
