US Army Brigadier General. Charles Dudley Hartman, after graduating from the Brookhaven, Mississippi High School, entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating there in the Class of 1908. He had a nick name among his associates as "Baldy". After his graduation from West Point he had an interesting and busy career, serving in the Phillipines in 1909 to 1912, then to the Mexican border troubles. Charles married Marjorie Tripp in Water Town, New York, January 22, 1913. He was in France during World War One, and appointed Assistant Director then Director of the Sales of Surplus war materials. After the Armistice he entered Harvard University for a post graduate course and received his Master's Degree in 1929. Shortly thereafter, he became head of the Army Transport Service at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation. Charles was promoted to Brigadier General in 1941 and placed in charge of the construction of 23 Army cantonments for housing WWII draftees. From April 1941 to early 1942, he served as Commanding General of the Quartermaster Replacement Center at Camp Lee, Virginia when, because of a serious heart attack, he was forced to retire. General Hartman died at his home in Washington, Wednesday morning, February 14, 1962, at the age of 75. The Rosary was said at the funeral home, Thursday the 15th, conducted by his son, the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Joseph Wentworth Hartman. Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m., Friday the 16th from the St. Matthews Cathedral, also conducted by his son, with burial in Arlington Cemetery.
