Obituary of A. C. Cohen, Sr.,(Date of Death: 04 Jan 1961) published in the Leader Times, Brookhaven, Mississippi

Final Rites Held For A.C. Cohen, Sr., Well Known Resident

Relatives and friends alike were shocked on last Wednesday at the sudden passing of Mr. A.C. Cohen, Sr. He had suffered a heart attack two years ago but had recovered and was soon at work again. Mr. Alonzo Clifford Cohen was born in Dothan, Alabama seventy two years ago. He came to Brookhaven thirty-eight years ago from Norfield where he had managed the commissary of the Dinkman Lumber Company. In Brookhaven, he was first with Swift and Company, then engaged in his own mercantile business, and later co-owner of the Brookhaven Box Factory with the late Mr. C. D. Rhymes of Monticello. In 1933, he became associated with the Hartman Funeral Homes in charge of all offices of this firm and continued with Mr. Frank Hartman after the several homes were recently consolidated under new ownership.

Mr. Cohen was married on October 19, 1909 to Miss Bessie Mae Davis, formerly of Laurel, at Bond, Mississippi, who passed away thirteen years ago. He is survived by two sons and two daughters, Dr. A.C. Cohen, Jr., Athens, Georgia, Mrs. W.G. Orr, Spokane, Washington, Raymond O. Cohen and Mrs. T.Edgar Applewhite of Brookhaven and by eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Quiet and unassuming yet affable and friendly, Mr. Cohen was known to thousands, his ready smile and calm amiable greeting inviting a stop for a friendly word in town or in office. Here was a man it was good to know. A wealth of flowers attested to the friendship and esteem of scores of friends. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. John W. Moore of the First Methodist Church in the Chapel of the Hartman Funeral Home at 3 P.M. on Thursday, January 5th with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. The pall bearers were Lee Cooper, Tom Haley, James Davis, Dewey Jackson, Ford Westbrook and James Kelly, all old employees of the Hartman Funeral Home.
