Son of William A. Barnhart and Abigial Sams Barnhart Allen Fritch. Husband of Wilma Hubble Barnhart, father of Frank Albert Barnhart and Louis A. Barnhart. Died from a tragic accident at work.

Friday November 24, 1882

A sad accident occurred at the works of the New Packing Company this morning at about half-past 11,resulting in the sudden death of Alonzo Barnhart, who has for some time been employed in and about the works. The deceased, in company with several other men was helping to lift a large and heavy fly wheel using a crow bar and in some manner the wheel slipped on one end of the crow bar causing the other end to fly up violently, striking him on the head and neck. His neck was broken by the blow and he was almost instantly killed. He was about 23 years of age, of steady habits and well spoken of. Deceased leaves a wife an one child, a little boy about one year old. He formerly was employed as brakeman on the Rock Island Road and lived at Stuart. Coroner Wilder was summoned and an inquest held. The following is the verdict of the coroner's jury.

Atlantic, Iowa Nov. 24, 1882 State of Iowa, Cass County
An inquest holden at the office of B.A. Wilder in Cass County, on the 24th day of November a.D. 1882, before B. A. Wilder, Coroner of said county, upon the body of Alonzo Barnhart, there lying dead, by the jurors whose names are hereto subscribed, the said jurors upon their oath do say that from the evidence in the case, they find that the deceased came to his death by a blow from a crow bar in his own hands, while assisting in removing a fly wheel from the platform at the Cass County Packing House on the 24th day of November, A.D. 2883 at 11:40 o'clock, A.M. that his death was accidental and under the circumstances, unavoidable. In testimony hereof, the said jurors have hereunto set their hands, the day and year aforesaid.
