Caroline Aigle
Birth: Sep. 12, 1974
Death: Aug. 21, 2007

French Air Force Pilot. On May 28 1999, she became the first woman to serve as a fighter pilot in the French Air Force. Born in Montauban, France to a military physician, she spent her early years in Africa. By her early teens she was being schooled at such prestigious military institutions as the Saint-Cyr Military Academy, the Prytanee Militaire advanced high school and finally the Ecole Polytechnique, where she graduated as class valedictorian. After her school years, she decided to enter the French Air Force. Two years later, at the age of twenty-five, she became the first woman to receive the French Air Force's coveted fighter pilot wings. In 2000, Aigle was appointed to the Mirage-2000-5 (a French-built multi-role fighter jet manufactured by Dassault Aviation), in the Escadron 2/2 Cote-d'Or. By 2005, she was promoted to the rank of Commandant. In July 2007, Aigle was diagnosed with cancer, and passed away only a month later. At the time of her death, she had accumulated a total of 1600 hours of flight time. (bio by: K)
