REST IN PEACE..

Colonel James Rion Ervin, United States Army (Retired), a long time resident of El Paso, departed this life on July 12, 2009. He was born on June 13, 1938 in Darlington, S.C. Rion was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather, and was widely respected and loved by innumerable friends in both the military and civilian communities. Rion was noted for his engaging personality, was appreciated for his unfailing willingness to help anyone who was in need, and was highly respected and admired for his unique technical and leadership skills. He always placed the care of his Soldiers and their families as his top priority and was a selfless leader who led by example. For his outstanding military service, Rion was awarded the Legion of Merit. Rion's professional career will be remembered as one of dedicated service and uncommon accomplishments. He was renowned for both his tactical expertise in air defense and his technical knowledge in the command and control arena. Rion served several tours of duty in Germany, where he met his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Ellen. Rion is also survived by his two daughters, Patricia and husband Phil of California, and Maria and husband Shannon of Virginia; two granddaughters, Melanie and Kristin; siblings, Martha, Sam, Jake, and Willie; and a host of nieces and nephews. All will sorely miss Rion, but will treasure their loving memories of his lively spirit. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home-Carolina, with Vigil Services at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, July 17 at 12:30 p.m. at Fort Bliss Chapel 5, Robert E. Lee Dr., officiated by Pater Simeon, followed by memorial services with full military honors at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery. Col. Ervin will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
