Capt John Ing
Birth: 1840
Illinois, USA
Death: Jun. 4, 1920
Illinois, USA

Captain John Ing earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Indiana Asbury University and was a founding member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He was a Methodist missionary from 1870 to 1878 and introduced the apple tree to Aomori Japan, using western style cultivation techniques. Until then, apples grown in Japan were small, bitter and rarely eaten. They had never seen nor tasted large, sweet apples. Aomori Japan is the largest apple producing region today. In 1872, he established a church in Hirosaki, that grew to a membership of more than 2,000 members. He was also a botanist at the time when there was starvation in the Orient. He showed peasants how to grow simple foods like cabbages, tomatoes and apples and saved thousands of lives.
