Birth: Nov. 20, 1976
Altoona
Blair County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Oct. 27, 2005, Iraq

Sgt. 1st Class Daniel R. Lightner of Hollidaysburg, Pennsyvania attended Lock Haven University and received an associate's degree from Kansas City, Kansas Community College. He served three years in the Army before joining his National Guard unit in 1998. After returning to Pennsylvania, he got a job as a guard at the federal prison in Lewisburg. While working full time, he studied criminal justice. Sgt. Lightner decided he wanted to be a police officer instead of a prison guard, so he applied for a job as a state trooper. He enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in Hershey in November 2003 and graduated as a member of its 115th class in April 2004 before being assigned to Embreeville. Daniel served as a Pennsylvania State Policeman where he was a dedicated law enforcement officer. He liked to hunt and fish but was equally happy sitting on a porch or watching TV and driving his 1965 and 1969 Ford Mustangs. He was also an avid runner. After being deployed to Iraq, he liked to keep in touch with his fellow officers via e-mail. He always thanked his colleagues for their care packages. He put his military service ahead of any personal interests, even a girlfriend. He felt for the time being that if he were to be deployed to Iraq that he would be missing her too much. Daniel was killed at age 28 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq. He was posthumously awarded a purple heart.
