Alyssa Barberi of Chester, a 6th grade student at the Chester Academy and lifelong resident of the area, died Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Arden Hill Campus, Goshen, NY. She was 11 years old.
The daughter of John and Susan Barberi (nee Breen), she was born on August 25, 1997 in Goshen, NY. She was a member of the Girl Scouts Heart of Hudson, Troop #325 of Chester for 6 years. Alyssa and her troop worked on several community projects working on their Bronze Award-the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn.
Alyssa enjoyed "hanging out" with her brother and her family and friends were very special to her. She enjoyed the outdoors with bike riding, hiking, skiing, kayaking, swimming, and playing soccer. The smile she always wore showed how much she truly enjoyed life. She was a very kind and loving young "Lady". She was always willing to help others, especially young children and babies. Alyssa will always be a special part of our lives and her memory will always be with us. She is our special "Angel".
Alyssa is survived by her parents John and Susan Barberi at home; her brother, John at home, her maternal grandparents, John (Jack) and Marion Breen of Staten Island, NY; her paternal grandparents, Jim (Poppy) and Theresa Barberi of Staten Island, NY. She is also survived by her uncle and aunt, Danny and Patty Breen of Staten Island, NY, uncle, Jackie Breen of Staten Island, NY, uncle and aunt, Jimmy and Sally Barberi of Tom's River, NJ, uncle and aunt, Jim and Susan Mangone of Staten Island, NY; her cousins: Danny, Dana and baby Danny, Joseph and Christine, Patrick, Michael, and Annie Breen, all of Staten Island, NY, Jessica Barberi and Justin Barberi of Tom's River, NJ, and Louis, James and Nicholas Mangone of Staten Island, NY., also survive her. Alyssa was predeceased by her paternal great-grandmother, Octavia Muccino, and cousin, Robert Breen.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 11, at Flynn Funeral and Cremation Memorial Centers, 139 Stage Rd., Monroe, NY 10950, during the hours of 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Columba R.C. Church, 29 High St., Chester, NY 10918, with Fr. John S. Bonnici officiating. Burial will follow at St. Columba R.C. Church Cemetery, Route 94, Chester, NY.
A Memorial Fund has been established in Memory of Alyssa, contributions to the Alyssa Barberi Memorial Fund, c/o Key Bank 74 Brookside Avenue, P.O. Box 581, Chester, New York 10918-0581, would be appreciated by the family.
