Virgil Eugene Anders, 87, of Oskaloosa and formerly of University Park, died Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born September 5, 1924, at Rose Hill, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Eva Stuart Anders. He graduated from Rose Hill High School with the class of 1941. Following graduation he farmed for a short while. In 1942, he entered the United States Army and served as a truck driver hauling prisoners and fuel for the troops in the European Theater and proudly served under General George S. Patton. Virgil was discharged in 1946. On September 5, 1947, he was united in marriage to Catherine Heslinga, daughter of Andrew and Jennie Terpstra Heslinga, and to theis union four daughters were born. They made their home in Oskaloosa and Virgil began his long career as a route salesman for several companies including: Meadow Gold Dairy, Strand Bread Company and lastly Hiland Potato Chip Company. In 1955, they moved to University Park, and lived there for over 50 years. In retirement Virgil enjoyed making deliveries for Hy-Vee. He also enjoyed fixing bicycles and donating them to local charities, and helping at the SHARE IOWA warehouse. He also enjoyed going to coffee and tinkering in the basement.

Virgil's family includes his wife of over 64 years, Catherine Anders of Oskaloosa; four daughters and their husbands, Connie and Phillip Heberer of Saginaw, Texas, Judith and Daniel Stockham of Bloomfield, Carol and William Vertz of Oskaloosa and Terri and Michael Behl of Phoenix, Arizona; three grandsons, and two great granddaughters all residing in Iowa.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Leslie and Louis Anders; and two sisters, Vivian Augustine and Mary McCormick.

As was Virgil's wish, his body has been cremated. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Mahaska Health Partnership Serenity House.
