Politican, lawyer, Confederate officer. Lawyer in Culpeper, Virginia. Went to California in 1849 and was the secretary for California's first Consitutional Convention. Enlisted a private, company B, 13th Virginia. Served as a quartermaster with the rank of major on A.P. Hill's staff from May 1862 until the end of the War. Lost a leg at the battle of Cedar Mountain. Post-war, lawyer and farmer in Albemarle County. Served as Virginia's attorney general and was the 1892 Populist Party vice-presidential candidate.
