Soldier. Pfc. Shawn M. Atkins, 20, of Parker, Colo., died June 14 in Baghdad, Iraq, as a result of a non-combat injury. Atkins was assigned to Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 4th Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Hanau, Germany. Born at Clark Air Base, Phillipines, he was a 2002 graduate of Chaparral High School in Parker.
Atkins was nearing the end of his tour of duty when the accident occured. His duty was maintaining and repairing military trucks while in Iraq.
Atkins lettered in football and wrestling at Chaparral High School; he played as both an offensive and defensive lineman on the football team.
He waa the son of Jim and Sukie Atkins. Also survived by his brother, David Atkins; grandparents Jim and Sally Atkins, and Mr. and Mrs. Chong.
