Chaplain Joseph T. Brown was the pastor of Cherry Hill Methodist Church and became Chaplain for the 6th Maryland Regiment, Infantry during the Civil War. He is specifically mentioned in the Official Records of the War as being one of the Winchester 8 captured at Winchester during the Gettysburg Campaign and held for four months at Libby prison until 7 Oct. 1863. After his release he resigned due to illness and was discharged. He suffered chronic diarrhea and finally succumbed at his home in Cherry Hill, Cecil County, 8 May 1865. His parishioners and friends erected a handsome monument over his grave at Cherry Hill UM Cemetery 19 Aug. 1865 and on 19 Oct. 2003 Brown was honored by the same church congregation with a Homecoming and Civil War Field Service.
