Lt. Col. Billy C. Menges [LaVale]
LAVALE — Lt. Col. Billy C. Menges, of LaVale, passed away Oct. 18, 2009, at WMHS-Memorial Campus.
Born Feb. 27, 1926, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles D. Menges and Gladys I. (Wolford) Menges, of Cumberland. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Patsy Rae (Reger) and his son, Mark J. Menges.
Billy graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1943 and joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He served in the 5th Marine Division, and Battalion, 27th Regiment, Fox Company on Iwo Jima in the south Pacific. Mr. Menges graduated from Frostburg State Teachers College in 1950 after which he received a commission as an officer in the USMCR. He participated in the Inchon landing during the Korean War. Billy was the commander of the 43rd Rifle Company USMCR McKaigs Hill, Cumberland, from 1957-1962. He served a total of 41 years in the Marine Corps reserves. He was a lifetime member of the Mountainside Marine Corps League Detachment. Billy retired in 1983 after 31 years of employment at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory.
He was an avid bowler, and previously wrote a weekly article for the Cumberland Times News sports page, reporting events from the area bowling scene. He coached the Saturday morning youth league at the LaVale Bowler for 38 years. He was a member of the LaVale United Methodist Church for 50 years.
He is survived by two sons, Eric T. Menges, of Enon Valley, Pa., and Joel F. Menges, of Pensacola, Fla.; and a brother, Charles V. Menges, of Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale, on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 pm.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. in the LaVale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating.
Interment will follow at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens in LaVale with military honors being accorded by the United States Marine Corps Honors Detail.
