Susan Diane Purdy, 55, of Chino, died Monday at Loma Linda University Medical Center where she had been confined for one month following open heart surgery and many complications.

Susan was born June 23, 1951, in Hollywood, CA to Vincent James and June Hall Pokorski. She grew up with her parents and older brother Greg in Sylmar. She was a graduate of Bishop Alemany High School and received a BA in History from California State University, Northridge. She continued her education at La Verne College to update her secondary history teaching credential with a major in English.

Susan began working for Chino Valley Unified School District in 1976 at Ramona Jr. High where she team-taught the Mentally Gifted program with fellow teacher Gary E. Purdy. They married in 1977 and have lived in Ontario, Phillips Ranch, and Chino. They both taught English at Don Antonio Lugo and Ruben S. Ayala high schools after moving on from Ramona. Selected Teacher of the Year in 1990.

She loved teaching and her students, but was looking forward to retiring in the next year. CVUSD named her "Teacher of the Year" in 1990. She and Gary attended the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland with UNLV's summer class 11 years, completing the canon last August in London.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, and is survived by her husband Gary, brother Greg, sister-in-law Robin, nephew Mark (and wife Rachel) and grandnephew Kyle, and by her husband's family.

Susan was an active member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic parish in Chino and was a facilitator in the Women's Bible Study for 15 years.

**Mr and Mrs Purdy were both English teachers that my husband and I had at Don Lugo High School. They were great teachers and super nice people! Mrs Purdy will be missed!**
