Infant girl found in weeds to be buried Wednesday.

STAN MADDUX
Tribune Correspondent

LAPORTE -- LaPorte County Police will ask the public for help again on the death of a newborn girl found in some weeds in hopes of locating the mother prior to Wednesday's burial.

At a 1 p.m. press conference today, detectives with the sheriff's office will distribute to area media outlets fliers containing information about the case and telephone numbers to call for people who might know the mother.

Specifically, the fliers serve notice again that investigators want to hear from anyone with information about a female pregnant in early March who is now without a baby.

The fliers have already been distributed throughout LaPorte County and surrounding areas, including Michigan, due to the discovery being less than 2 miles south of the state line.

LaPorte County Police Detective Shayna Mireles said the purpose of the news conference is to get the word out again, especially to those who have not heard about the case.

Police emphasized tips can be made anonymously.

Mireles, the lead investigator in the case, said calls on who might be the mother have come in from all over.

"We have several leads we are following but nothing concrete yet," she said.

Meanwhile, burial for the girl is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in the children's section of Pine Lake Cemetery, said LaPorte Chief Deputy Coroner John Sullivan.

Originally, police announced the burial would occur Monday.

Sullivan, though, said a casket for the infant had to be specially ordered, which took longer than anticipated.

There was also some extra planning involved to accommodate up to 75 or more people expected to gather at the burial site underneath a canopy to pay their respects, Sullivan said.

The grave was donated by Pine Lake Cemetery, and local florists are providing the flowers.

"People are being real nice. I figured they would be on a heartbreaking case like this," Sullivan said.

Without a parent or any other legal guardian stepping forward, Sullivan said the coroner's office has assumed responsibility for providing a proper burial.

Sullivan said the name on the tombstone will read "Baby Jane Doe."

Because the dates of the baby's birth and death remain unknown, March 2006 will also be inscribed on the headstone, he said.

On March 12, a man doing some work outdoors discovered the Caucasian baby wrapped in a towel inside a plastic garbage bag in the 8000 block of North County Road 300 East in Galena Township.

So far, an autopsy has not determined a cause of death or whether the baby was alive at birth, said Sullivan.

The baby was carried full term.

"Hopefully, we will be able to solve the case. The detectives are working real hard on it," Sullivan said.
