Born in Astoria, Queens, NY, Marie then grew up in the Bronx & attended the College of New Rochelle(NY) & earned a degree in English Lit. in 1939. She appeared in several radio soap operas in the 40's & 50's. She also taught at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City for over 35 years, focusing on makeup & costuming. Her real love & joy though, was writing plays & musicals for children & many of them were performed at Hoffman Camp & the Hoffman School in Riverdale, NY. Marie also enjoyed writing poetry, short stories, knitting & crocheting. Always so elegant was she, dressing beautifully & with perfect makeup. Her face & skin did not belie her age.
Predeceased by her beloved husband of about 64 years, Francis R. Hawthorne & her younger sister, Grace Elaine deWolfe Muthig. Survived by 2 daughters, Mary Louise & Shirin; 4 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Heather, Jennifer & Timothy; 1 great-granddaughter, Grace; & 1 brother, Jack.
Marie (or "Mimi" as her grandchildren & great-granddaughter called her), touched many lives & will be missed by all.
"Tally-ho & keep on dancing!"
