He enlisted August 5, 1861 and served three years in the Civil War in Co. I, 3rd Iowa Infantry. He was discharged Aug. 5, 1864. He made a good record as a brave soldier.
He came to Iowa in 1867, becoming a partner in business with his brothers, Oscar and Charles, at Boone in 1871.
Alfred Schleiter was a Civil War Veteran. He came to Ida Grove, Iowa, and went in business 1882, building block 5, Lot 11 in 1885 and continued a general merchandising business until his death.
In 1868, he married Eva Hinman with whom he lived happily until her death in 1877. Children born were Mamie and Frank. In 1878, he married Nellie Whitaker, who died suddenly and unexpectedly while he was away in 1881. To them was born a daughter, Grace.
He married his 3rd wife, Mrs. Ida Kegean, at Ida Grove, Iowa in 1884. Apparently he Schleiters were having problems and talking divorce when he killed her and shot himself. They lived in block 8, Lot 7. In 1902, it was a cottage hospital briefly.
Funeral services were held at the residence on Saturday forenoon conducted by Rev. Buchanan, after which the K. P. Lodge sent the remains to Boone, Iowa, on the afternoon train in the care of an escort of 11 of their members. At Boone, they were met by the Boone Lodge which conducted the ceremonies at the grave in W. Linwood Cemetery, Des Moines Township, Boone, Iowa.
