Seborn Riley Branan was the son of William Paschal Branan and his 2nd wife Mary Young. He was likely named after Seaborn R Hobbs, a nephew of Pachal's 1st wife Eliza Ann Hobbs. Seaborn Hobbs, also named one of his sons Pascal Hobbs.
At the age of 17, Seborn enlisted August 15, 1864 at Pollard, Alabama in the 2nd Alabama Reserves which was redesignated between March and May 1865 as the 63rd Alabama Infantry Company B. He appears as present on the Company muster roll for September and October 1864, with pay due from the time of his enlistment. His Company was positioned at Fort Blakely in defense of Mobile until March 1865 when they were ordered to Spanish Fort, three days before the battle there. They were with the 62nd Infantry, part of General Thomas' Brigade. Having lost several killed and wounded during the first six days of the battle at Spanish Fort, they were relieved and sent back to Blakely. Company B arrived there in time to participate in the siege of Blakely. After it was captured April 9, 1865, some 300 were taken prisoner and sent to Ship Island near Biloxi, Mississippi. He is listed on a roll of prisoners received at Ship Island on April 15, 1865. He was then transferred from Ship Island to Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 1, 1865. The prisoners were exchanged just prior to the surrender at Appomattox at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4, 1865. Records indicate that Seborn was paroled May 11, 1865 at Meridian, Mississippi. He later told how he was put ashore and told to go home.
He married Susan Judah January 9, 1871. He was a local minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, for several years. Later in life he affiliated with the Christian Hill Congregational Church and served that church as a minister, giving his best and most faithful service until he was disabled and was superannuated.
